THE ART OF LIVING FOODS COOKBOOK

CLIENT: DESAI HEALTH AND WELLNESS , WASHINGTON, DC

Shown: Cookbook cover and a small sample of pages

The Art of Living Foods cookbook is full of recipes that use "living foods" such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, whole grains, and nuts/seeds. Meals that incorporate these foods can create lightness, vitality and stamina, and give us energy in abundance.

The cookbook design mirrors that energy with its cheerful color scheme and simple graphic elements. Photographs from each "living food" category appear on the cover, against a radiant gold, sunny backdrop. Quotations on the "energetics of food" grace the bottom of each recipe page, flanked by a green  leaf triad, which is also used in the company logo, creating a consistent brand/identity. The divisions between each recipe section are full of vibrant photographs of food against a brightly colored two-page spread. The overall design displays the vitality and pleasure derived from the living foods within,  creating a warm, inviting place to turn when hunger strikes.

Graphite is a photo book comprised of images taken by Kevin Blythe at Union Graphite Specialty Co., a graphite machine shop in Bridgewater, MA. The shop is owned by my uncle, and we visited him there in 2014. The book's design is a collaboration between Kevin and myself. It was kept simple and direct, allowing the photographs to take center stage. Kevin's photos highlight various machines and equipment within the shop, as well as the abstract beauty of small details: gears, scraps of graphite collected in barrels, drill bits coraled in a box—all with the patina of age. The book is a tribute to my uncle and his company's history, as an ever disappearing remnant from America's manufacturing past.
All Photos by Kevin Blythe, 2014.
